Nochar has developed numerous environmental and waste handling products for the nuclear industry through its years of research in the industry.
Nochar, Inc. of Indianapolis has created a series of high tech polymer technologies to solidify oil,organics aqueous, acids and bases. Nochar has created numerous polymer blends to treat highly complex waste streams generated throughout the nuclear complex.
“N” Series Polymer provides a cost effective, high performance solution for a wide range of liquid waste problems. “N” Series technology provides long term stability even under high dose radiation, minimal volumetric increase, with minimal or no mixing.
Nochar polymers have been utilized at numerous D.O.E. sites including Rocky Flats, Mound, Savannah River Site, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, INEEL and Hanford along with sites in the countries of Canada, Slovenia and Australia. International nuclear waste generators such as Russia, China, U.K., Romania, Japan, Czech Republic, South Africa, France and others are testing Nochar polymers for complex nuclear contaminated liquid waste.
Nochar polymers offer strong options for disposal and burial of the waste form. Solidified waste using Nochar polymer have met the criteria for long term burial at NTS, WIPP and Envirocare. Nochar polymers have also been certified incineratable and produces less than .02% ash.
Nochar’s N910 Petro Bond is an elastomeric polymer designed to solidify oils,organics, hydrocarbons, and sludges into a solid disposable mass which has been accepted for burial at major sites including NTS, WIPP, Envirocare and other D.O.E. sites. Nochar discovered through field applications that Legacy and long term stored liquid waste contains some percentage of water. This aqueous portion in the waste is a direct result of condensation in storage conditions, original processing of the waste and other conditions both forseen and unexpected.
When this occurs (as it usually does), Nochar recommends the addition of N960 Acid Bond to handle the aqueous portion of the waste.
N910 Petro Bond and N960 Acid Bond have been successfully combined with water at numerous D.O.E. and International sites.

At present, Nochar has developed numerous products for commercial sale in the U.S. and international markets:
An efficient and effective polymer formulated to solidify oils, organics, solvents and other hydrocarbons into a solid mass for storage, transportation and disposal. N910 produces excellent TCLP results and has been tested to 89 Mega Rad (Gamma/Cobalt Source).
The N991 product is targeted specifically for the medical and weapons laboratories that generate radiated and mixed waste in vials. It contains blended polymers designed specifically for the production bonding of Ultimagold and toluene based scintillation fluids.. The N991 product line includes a fully enclosed grinder and the N991 bonding agent. (The container is supplied by the user). The grinder cuts up the vials with the liquid waste and is then poured into the container for solidification. N991provides a safe one-step process for waste disposal.
N960 “ACID BOND” is formulated to bond acids, alkaline and contaminated aqueous waste, with or without radiological constituents. N960 is effective at both low and high ph ranges, creating a solid matrix for storage, transportation and disposal. Acid Bond has been consistently used through out nuclear complex to solidify TRU waste streams for transportation and disposal at WIPP.
Nochar has worked with many sites throughout the D.O.E. complex such as Rocky Flats, Mound, Savannah River, Hanford and others. The objective is to create polymer blends to target complex problem radioactive waste streams in order to provide one step products. The following are just a few examples of the resulting blends:
- Polymer blend incorporating enriched Boron for waste streams containing active neutron sources.
- Polymer blends containing sodium carbonate to adjust the ph ratios and solifify in a one step process.
- Polymer blend using calcium carbonate for use with organic waste containing tri butyls.
- Polymer blends designed to solidify a wide range of organic/aqueous streams, for single step processing.
Nochar has consistantly demonstrated the ability to work with on-site waste management personnel to develop simple cost effective approaches for soloidification, transpotation and disposal of radioactive waste streams, while maintaining strict ALARA standards.
